Western Opposition to Georgian Foreign Agents Law Reveals Why It Is Essential.
Sputnik International
On Tuesday, the Georgian parliament overcame a Presidential veto to pass a new ‘foreign agents’ legislation that requires foreign-funded Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to register as foreign agents and disclose their donors. The Transparency in Foreign Influence Act would not ban NGOs but require those receiving over 20% of funding from abroad to register and disclose donors.
Despite the legislation receiving support from the majority of MPs, the US and EU have opposed it, threatening visa restrictions on Georgian legislators and claiming it will harm Georgia’s “EU path.” Western media labeled the legislation as pro-Russian, echoing similar actions taken by Russia against foreign NGOs.
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and USAID, two well-funded US NGOs, are active in Georgia, raising concerns about foreign influence. Analysts warn that Georgia does not want to be used as a tool against Russia, fearing violent revolutions orchestrated by Western powers.
The Georgian Prime Minister reported a threat from an EU Commissioner, demonstrating the intense pressure faced by the country to follow Western agendas. This highlights the complex dynamics of foreign influence and democracy in the region.
