SC sides with NRA in NY coercion case

Exciting news from the Supreme Court! In a unanimous decision, the NRA has been given the green light to pursue a claim against a New York state official for allegedly unlawfully coercing companies to cut ties with the gun rights group. The court found that the NRA’s free speech rights under the First Amendment may have been violated by Maria Vullo, the former superintendent of the New York state Department of Financial Services.

This case is part of a larger debate on government coercion of private entities, with another case involving claims that the Biden administration pressured social media companies to remove certain content. Justice Sonia Sotomayor emphasized that government officials cannot use coercion to suppress views they disagree with.

The NRA’s lawsuit focuses on Vullo’s actions following the tragic 2018 Parkland school shooting, where she encouraged companies to sever ties with gun rights groups. Despite Vullo’s argument that she was within her rights to consider reputational risks, the Supreme Court disagreed and allowed the NRA’s case to proceed.
