IEC in KZN: Parties, independents must lodge objections by 21:00 on Friday

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in KwaZulu-Natal is addressing challenges that negatively affected voting in the region. The IEC has allowed political parties and independent candidates until 21:00 on Friday to lodge objections about incidents that may significantly impact election outcomes, such as technical glitches, shootings, stabbings, and arrests.

Despite these setbacks, the provincial head of elections, Ntombifuthi Masinga, stated that preliminary results are expected on Sunday. As of now, the province has captured 17.33% of results from 4,974 voting stations, with the MK Party leading in votes.

Masinga acknowledged the challenges faced during the election, including issues with voter management devices and various incidents that occurred at voting stations. She expressed regret over these incidents, such as assaults on IEC officials and two lives lost in KwaZulu-Natal.

However, she assured that the IEC was sufficiently resourced for the election and is working towards concluding the counting of results by Friday. Stay tuned for more updates as the election results trickle in.
