Washington Zoo Readying for New Pandas

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington is eagerly awaiting the arrival of two new Chinese giant pandas later this year. The zoo is preparing their habitat with hammocks and climbing structures, while keepers are learning about the pandas’ habits and preferences. The pandas, male Bao Li and female Qing Bao, will be part of a new research and breeding agreement for the next 10 years.

The pandas will undergo a quarantine and acclimation process upon arrival, with their diet being adjusted to include a bread-like substance to help them transition. Zoo staff, including giant panda keeper Mariel Lally, are excited to build relationships with the pandas and ensure they feel at home in their new environment. Despite the language barrier, the pandas will easily communicate with their keepers through hand signals and familiar routines.
