South Africans recently participated in the country’s seventh democratic general elections. The elections, marking 30 years since the late Nelson Mandela’s presidency, include voting for members of the National Assembly and state legislatures.
President
The National Assembly will choose the President for the next five years, typically from the party with a majority. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) currently faces its toughest election yet, requiring 50 percent of the Assembly for a majority.
With the introduction of independent candidates and a proportional voting system, the elections have become more competitive, with the possibility of a coalition government if no party secures the majority.
Three horses
The leading players in the election are the ANC, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The outcome will determine the country’s political landscape for the next five years.
When to know the outcome
Results of the elections are expected to be announced over the weekend following the voting day. The process of counting and verifying votes may take longer due to the increased number of ballots.
