Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed concern over China’s new rules that could lead to the detention of foreigners in the South China Sea, calling it an escalation of the situation. The rules, effective June 15, allow for the detention of foreigners suspected of trespassing in areas where China has maritime sovereignty disputes with neighboring countries.
China’s actions have raised tensions in the region, especially with the Philippines, with frequent accusations of trespassing in disputed waters. Marcos affirmed that the Philippines will use diplomatic channels to prevent aggressive actions and ensure Filipino fishermen can continue their activities in the South China Sea.
Taking a tougher stance than his predecessor, Marcos is supported by allies like the United States, Japan, and Australia in standing up to China’s claims in the region. Despite international rulings against China’s claims, Beijing continues to assert its sovereignty over most of the South China Sea based on historical records.
