The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party are exploring the option of forming an alliance to challenge the current ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the 2027 general election. The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, and the spokesperson for the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Yunusa Tanko, discussed this possibility in recent interviews.
The potential alliance gained attention after meetings between the 2023 LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and prominent political figures like Atiku Abubakar, Sule Lamido, and Bukola Saraki. Abdullahi emphasized the need for various democratic forces to unite in order to rescue Nigeria from what he described as the APC’s mismanagement.
Tanko highlighted the importance of strategic discussions between leaders before involving their respective parties in any potential merger. He differentiated between a merger, which involves leaving party names and structures, and an alliance, which allows parties to work together without compromising their identities.
