The Falkland Islands Government has agreed to undertake a full public consultation on large-scale salmon farming following a claim brought by Unity Marine Limited. The dispute was resolved by mutual consent, paving the way for a consultation before making a decision on the issue. This decision follows an earlier challenge to prevent large-scale salmon farming in the Falkland Islands and a commitment to hold a full public consultation before any further action.

The consultation will include options identified by MacAlister Elliott and Partners, and will range from “no salmon farming” to “commercial salmon farming limited by environmental capacity.” The Government aims to work with Unity Marine Limited to finalize the consultation process and information, with a final decision to be made by the Executive Council. This decision will be crucial for amending the Fish Farming Ordinance 2006 to implement any changes.

Unity Marine has welcomed FIG’s decision for a public consultation, emphasizing the need for a thorough understanding of the industry’s potential opportunities and risks. The Director of Unity Marine, James Wallace, hopes the community will engage in the process to make an informed decision regarding large-scale aquaculture in the Falkland Islands.
