China deploys warplanes and ships near Taiwan — Naharnet

Taiwan closely monitored dozens of Chinese warplanes and navy vessels off its coast on Friday, amidst a large-scale military exercise launched by Beijing in response to Taiwan’s inauguration of new leaders who reject China’s claim that Taiwan is part of its territory. Despite the display of military force, the people of Taiwan remained largely unfazed, carrying on with their daily lives.

The defense ministry reported tracking 49 Chinese warplanes and 19 navy vessels, with some crossing the median line in the Taiwan Strait. President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to freedom and democracy, urging China to end its military intimidation. China’s military actions were deemed punishment for perceived separatist forces in Taiwan seeking independence.

International relations expert Shi Yinhong stated that Beijing’s drills were meant to showcase its discontent with Taiwan’s administration policies. Despite China’s efforts to exert pressure, Taiwan remains resolute in its pursuit of de facto independence, prompting heightened military support from the U.S. and its allies.

As tensions escalate, the United Nations called for restraint from all parties involved to prevent further escalation in the region.
