Three organizations representing Acadians in Atlantic Canada have proposed turning the Chignecto Isthmus into a national park. The suggestion was made to a Senate committee reviewing a bill that would make Ottawa accountable for protecting the land strip connecting New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Nicole Arseneau-Sluyter, from the Société de l’Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick, stated that the national park status would safeguard an area of cultural importance to Acadians. The park would also help preserve the infrastructure against climate change. The proposal received support from the Fédération acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse and the Société Nationale de l’Acadie in their brief to the Senate’s committee on transport and communications. Both provinces want federal funding for the $650 million project, but Ottawa has agreed to cover only half of the cost. The area already hosts several national historic sites, making the national park idea feasible.
