TikTok stands by safety policies amid algorithm concerns

TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform, recently came under scrutiny for exposing teenagers to harmful content through its algorithms. Following an investigation by RTÉ’s Prime Time, TikTok conducted an urgent review to address the issue.

Morgan Evans, Director of Corporate & Policy Communications at TikTok, emphasized the platform’s commitment to safety and explained the measures taken to tackle problematic content. Recommender systems, which determine users’ feeds based on personal data, have raised concerns about promoting harmful material such as hate speech and self-harm.

In Ireland, TikTok has established a mission control center in Dublin to monitor content for misinformation and ensure election security. Despite global job cuts, the company continues to hire in Ireland and plans to open a second office building.

Furthermore, TikTok’s data security plan, ‘Project Clover,’ involves storing European user data in Ireland and Norway to address concerns over Chinese access to user information. While facing government bans in the US, UK, and EU institutions, TikTok remains committed to its Irish operations.
