Spain to provide €1bn military aid to Ukraine in decade-long defence deal

In a significant move, Spain has pledged €1bn in military aid to Ukraine this year, following a meeting between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Madrid. The defense and security deal signed between the two countries is deemed crucial in boosting Ukraine’s capabilities, especially in air defenses, in the face of ongoing attacks.

Spain’s commitment includes the supply of Patriot missiles, Leopard tanks, and ammunition. The aid package extends to various other areas such as intelligence, training, de-mining, and humanitarian assistance. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to Spain for the life-saving support and highlighted the urgent need for additional Patriot air defense systems to counter Russian attacks.

However, Hungary’s obstruction of EU military aid to Ukraine, amounting to €6.5bn, has caused frustration among member states. Lithuania’s foreign minister revealed that Hungary’s blockage of crucial resolutions has hampered collective EU decisions. The situation underscores the urgency of finding solutions to ensure swift aid disbursement for Ukraine’s defense and protection.

As the conflict persists, the need for solidarity and cooperation among EU nations becomes increasingly essential to address the challenges posed by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
