Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen assured that border guards will be trained to assess the vulnerability of asylum seekers under a new border security act. The act aims to combat instrumentalised migration at the border of Finland by allowing the government to suspend the reception of asylum applications. However, exceptions will be made for vulnerable migrants, such as children and the disabled.
Individual border guards will determine the vulnerability of asylum seekers on a case-by-case basis, which has raised concerns among legal experts and senior officers at the Finnish Border Guard. Rantanen expressed confidence in the training provided to border guards, stating that they would have the support and tools necessary to make such determinations.
The proposed bill has faced criticism for its impact on human rights treaties, but Rantanen believes it will garner the necessary support in parliament. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasized the need for gradual reopening of border-crossing points to manage the influx of migrants.
The bill will require the support of the largest opposition party, the Social Democrats, who aim to combat weaponised migration while ensuring a clear distinction between weaponised migration and genuine asylum-seeking.
