Pakistan sees record-breaking heatwave with temperatures topping 52 C

Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh experienced temperatures above 52 degrees Celsius, nearing the country’s record high, amidst an ongoing heatwave. International scientists attribute extreme temperatures in Asia to human-driven climate change.

In Mohenjo Daro, known for its archaeological sites from the Indus Valley Civilization, temperatures peaked at 52.2 C, close to the town and country’s record highs. Despite its hot summers, the town’s markets are quiet due to the current heatwave.

Locals like tea stall owner Wajid Ali and electronic repair shop owner Abdul Khaliq struggle with the intense heat, affecting their businesses. Doctor Mushtaq Ahmed notes that residents prefer staying indoors or near water to cope.

Pakistan, ranked fifth most vulnerable to climate change, faces challenges like floods and above-normal rains. The government, led by Prime Minister’s climate coordinator Rubina Khursheed Alam, is running awareness campaigns to address heatwave impacts.

While the heatwave in Mohenjo Daro is expected to ease, other areas in Sindh, including Karachi, anticipate another spell of high temperatures.
