Recent devastating air strikes by Israel in the “safe area” of al-Mawasi have resulted in the deaths of 21 people, with majority being civilian women and girls. The attacks, the second occurring near Rafah city, have left displaced Palestinians scrambling through the wreckage in search of loved ones and supplies.
When and Where
The attack took place at night on May 26 in Tal as-Sultan, just north of Rafah city, following threats from US President Joe Biden.
Details of the Attack
Shelters were set ablaze with people trapped inside, as Israel dropped bombs and missiles on the displacement camp, sparking a massive fire.
Casualties and Aftermath
The offensive has resulted in at least 45 deaths, with many more injured. The UNRWA reported that some perished in the fires, with horrific images surfacing post-attack.
Reasons Behind
Israel initially claimed to target Hamas but later called it a “tragic mistake”, escalating tensions further despite ICJ orders to cease the assault.
The UNSC is set to address the attacks, but the US has blocked previous resolutions against Israel.
