Driving through Mortlach, Saskatchewan on Highway 1, you can catch a glimpse of a remarkable sight – a towering wooden statue of former hockey broadcaster Don Cherry and his beloved late dog Blue. Standing over 15 feet tall and weighing 2,500 pounds, this masterpiece was carved by Darren Jones, also known as Mr. Cabb.
Commissioned by Mike Beaudoin, the idea for the sculpture stemmed from the success of Cherry-style gnomes previously created by Jones. Beaudoin provided the space along the highway for Jones to showcase his talent, kickstarting the Bohemian Market project. The statue captures Cherry’s iconic persona, complete with a powerful gaze and oversized hands.
Both Jones and Beaudoin consider the statue a belated birthday gift to Cherry, who turned 90 earlier in the year. The unique artwork has sparked conversations and admiration, drawing positive feedback from passersby. It’s a tribute to the passion for hockey shared by the people of southern Saskatchewan.
As an artist, Jones’s diverse skills and dedication to his craft shine through in this monumental creation, embodying the essence of Canadian sports culture and artistry.
