French left lawmaker suspended for waving Palestinian flag

La France Insoumise MP Sébastien Delogu waves a Palestinian national flag during a session of questions to the government at the Assemblée Nationale, in Paris on May 28, 2024.

French Parliament suspended left-wing lawmaker Sébastien Delogu for two weeks following his display of a Palestinian flag during a debate on recognizing Palestinian statehood.

The La France Insoumise (LFI) party member’s actions sparked controversy, leading to a two-week suspension and a reduction in parliamentary allowance.

This incident coincided with Spain, Ireland, and Norway’s recognition of Palestinian statehood, a move criticized by Israel. France has not followed suit, despite President Macron indicating a shift in policy.

Prime Minister Attal refrained from confirming France’s stance on recognizing Palestine during a session in Parliament, leaving the decision open.
