Postmedia Network Canada Corp. has announced the sale of the Winnipeg Sun, the Graphic Leader, and Kenora Miner & News newspapers to the Klein Group Ltd. The deal includes Postmedia’s Winnipeg commercial print division, digital properties, contracts, and other related parts. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
All employees at the newspapers will remain in their current roles with no anticipated job losses. Non-unionized employees will be offered the same job at the Klein Group, while unionized employees will keep their current terms. The deal is expected to close on or about June 1, pending conditions.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew expressed support for local media continuation but expressed concerns about Kevin Klein’s past as a partisan politician. Klein, the head of the Klein Group and former Winnipeg Sun publisher, refuted these concerns and emphasized the professionalism of the staff. He also mentioned a focus on journalism over potential political aspirations.
Despite speculation about Klein’s political future, he remains dedicated to the news business at present, with no commitment to a leadership run.
