Biden: Generations must ‘earn’ freedom, Memorial Day comments

President Joe Biden commemorated Memorial Day by honoring the nation’s fallen heroes and reaffirming the commitment to uphold the values they fought for. Speaking at Arlington National Cemetery, Biden emphasized the importance of each generation preserving the sacrifices made by service members.

He highlighted the ongoing battle between autocracy and democracy, urging unity in defending freedom and equality. Biden also recognized the importance of supporting veterans, referencing his late son Beau’s struggle with health issues linked to his military service.

Before the ceremony, Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The president praised the progress in providing benefits and healthcare to veterans through initiatives like the PACT Act.

The day began with a breakfast at the White House for officials, military leaders, veterans, and Gold Star families. Biden’s message emphasized the collective responsibility to honor and uphold the legacy of those who served.
