Saudi Arabia Appoints Ambassador to Syria as Relations Strengthen
Saudi Arabia has appointed its ambassador to Syria for the first time since 2012 when the kingdom closed its embassy in Damascus due to violence and terrorism in the country. Faisal al-Mujfel will serve as Riyadh’s new ambassador to Syria, with the aim of strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
Following the reopening of its embassy in Syria earlier this year, Saudi Arabia’s move to appoint an ambassador marks a new chapter in regional relations. Other Arab states, such as the United Arab Emirates, have also recently restored diplomatic ties with Syria, signaling support for the country’s progress in reclaiming its territory from foreign-sponsored terrorists.
In March 2022, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad visited the UAE, further solidifying the renewed relations between the two nations. The Arab League has also decided to reinstate Syria, ending a 12-year suspension and paving the way for Syria to rejoin the regional community.
