Cyclone Remal leaves millions powerless as it hits Bangladesh and India.

A severe cyclone named Remal made landfall in the coastal regions of Bangladesh and India, causing strong winds and heavy rain. The storm crossed Bangladesh’s Mongla port and India’s Sagar Islands with wind speeds of up to 135 kmph, leaving millions without electricity as power poles fell and trees were uprooted.

The storm led to one fatality in Kolkata and caused damage to shelters and houses in both countries. Bangladesh and India moved hundreds of thousands of people to storm shelters in anticipation of the cyclone, while authorities shut down electricity in many areas to prevent accidents.

In West Bengal, the power infrastructure suffered heavy damage with reports of uprooted electricity poles and damaged transformers. Flights were cancelled in Kolkata, and operations at ports were suspended in both countries. The Sunderbans delta and Kolkata experienced heavy rains, causing waterlogging and road blockages.

The cyclone also impacted Dhaka, causing flooding and disrupting commuters. This cyclone is the first of the year in the region, highlighting the increasing frequency of severe storms due to climate change.
