The National Assembly’s attempt to replace the current national anthem with the former one faced a setback due to the Attorney General’s warning that it should not be rushed. Lateef Fagbemi emphasized the need for citizen participation in such a decision, highlighting the importance of ensuring the anthem reflects the aspirations of Nigerians.
Former minority leader of the Senate, Eyinnaya Abaribe, also opposed the move, emphasizing that the current anthem’s second stanza is the country’s national prayer. He stressed that there are more urgent issues for the government to address.
During a public hearing, the Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi, recommended expanding the scope to focus on national identity rather than just changing the anthem. Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) called for wider consultations for general acceptance of any new anthem proposal.
While supporting the replacement of the current anthem with “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” Ozekhome believed it was necessary to inspire a sense of Nationhood among Nigerians.
Overall, the issue of changing the national anthem requires careful consideration and broad participation to ensure it reflects the collective will of the people.
