British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced plans to bring back National Service for 18-year-olds if the Conservative Party wins the July 4 general election. In an article for the “Daily Mail,” Sunak stated that the program will offer young people valuable opportunities to learn new skills, contribute to the community, and serve their country.
The proposed National Service would give individuals a choice between military service in the British armed forces for a year or alternative service through volunteering for 25 days in rescue services and other organizations. Sunak emphasized that participation will be open to all 18-year-olds, regardless of background.
Addressing concerns about compulsory service, Sunak clarified that the program is not conscription and will only involve individuals who choose to participate and pass entrance tests. The initiative comes in response to calls for preparedness from the Chief of the British General Staff, General Patrick Sanders, amid tensions with Russia.
