Washington – In a recent interview on “Face the Nation,” Rep. Pat Ryan expressed concern over the divide between active-duty service members in the U.S. military and the rest of the population, calling it “deeply problematic as a democracy.” Ryan, a veteran himself, emphasized the importance of bridging this gap and encouraging more individuals to serve their country.
He highlighted the efforts in Congress to prioritize recruiting within the annual defense bill, acknowledging the challenges faced by each branch of the military in meeting recruitment goals. Ryan, along with Rep. Mike Waltz, emphasized the need for more veterans in Congress and the importance of honoring their service, such as participating in traditions like hand-washing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Waltz, a Florida Republican and veteran, stressed the value of national service beyond military duty, suggesting ways to incentivize young people to serve their country through various initiatives. Both lawmakers underscored the importance of unity and shared experiences in promoting national service and fostering a sense of community among Americans.
