EU member states are considering the creation of a “drone wall” defense system along their borders with Russia and Belarus to counter hybrid threats and security challenges. Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite emphasized the need for joint defense efforts to protect the EU’s external borders and ensure regional security.
The proposed drone wall, stretching from Norway to Poland, would incorporate drones and other technologies to enhance surveillance and security measures. The ministers also discussed the possibility of funding the defense system through EU funding sources, despite Norway not being an EU member.
As tensions with Russia escalate, NATO states are ramping up their defense spending and coordination to address security concerns. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced plans to deliver drones to Ukraine, highlighting the shift towards a high tempo of armament production among member states.
While Russia has expressed concerns about Western arms deliveries near its borders, President Vladimir Putin has reassured that Russia has no interest in attacking NATO and dismisses fearmongering efforts. The focus remains on enhancing security cooperation and deterring potential threats in the region.
