Welcome to Water Security in Jordan: A Royal Commitment
His Majesty King Abdullah II has made water security a top priority since taking the throne. Recognizing the vital role of water in Jordan’s development, the King has directed efforts towards finding solutions to the country’s water challenges.
Jordan faces a range of water-related issues, from population growth to climate change. To address these challenges, the government is focused on projects like the National Carrier Project, which includes a major desalination facility. This project, costing $3 billion, is set to supply Jordan with 300 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually by 2029.
The Disi water project, inaugurated by His Majesty, provides Amman and other areas with a sustainable water source. Other initiatives, like the Al-Zara Ma’in project and the tightening of water source control, have also been implemented to secure Jordan’s water future.
The national water vision for 2023-2040 focuses on sustainable water security through projects like wastewater treatment, energy efficiency, and reducing water losses. The government’s commitment to the water sector has resulted in significant improvements, with water losses decreasing and coverage expanding.
With a strategic approach and strong leadership, Jordan is on track to achieve lasting water security for its people.
