Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea met to discuss further developing relations ahead of the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties. They also agreed to address North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats and strengthen security ties with the United States.
Kishida emphasized deepening cooperation to tackle global issues and promote a free and open Indo-Pacific, countering China’s influence. Yoon expressed a commitment to high-level exchanges in finance, industry, and technology with Japan.
Both leaders highlighted concerns about North Korea’s weapons development and agreed to expand people-to-people exchanges and promote clean energy sources like hydrogen and ammonia. They aim to enhance the Japan-Korea relationship as the anniversary approaches.
Despite recent improvements in bilateral relations, tension rose after Japan’s communication ministry raised concerns about a capital relationship between a Tokyo-based company and a South Korean firm. Yoon urged proper management of the issue to avoid unnecessary obstacles.
As preparations continue for the anniversary, Kishida and Yoon seek to make next year a “historical turning point” in relations between Japan and South Korea.
