ASUU Cries Out: Education Dying in Nigeria

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stark warning that the education sector in Nigeria is on the verge of collapse. Prof. Monday Igbafen, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU in the Benin Zone, emphasized the deteriorating state of academia due to government neglect and lack of action.

Highlighting issues such as infrastructure decay, poor funding, and the proliferation of universities without adequate resources, Prof. Igbafen called on stakeholders to intervene and pressure the government to address these critical issues. He stressed that the failure to rectify these challenges will inevitably lead to a crisis in the public university system in Nigeria.

The reckless establishment of universities by politicians as constituency projects has further strained the already limited resources provided by bodies such as TETFund. ASUU urges the government to halt the establishment of new universities and focus on adequately funding existing institutions to ensure they can compete globally.

ASUU remains committed to holding the Federal Government accountable for resolving these issues and implementing necessary reforms to safeguard the future of education in Nigeria.
