Switzerland returns ancient Mesopotamian artifacts to Iraq
Switzerland has returned three important Mesopotamian artifacts to Iraq, which were seized during a criminal procedure. The artifacts, dating back 1,700 to 2,800 years, are of great cultural significance to Iraq. The main accused in the case was sentenced for document forgery and violating the Cultural Property Transfer Act.
The objects, including Assyrian reliefs and a royal bust, were discovered in Iraq but were removed at an unknown date and possibly illegally. These artifacts represent the rich cultural heritage of Mesopotamia, which is under threat due to illegal excavations and trading.
Switzerland and Iraq are working together to protect cultural heritage, with Switzerland returning the fifth set of artifacts to Iraq since 2005. Although officially returned on Friday, the artifacts will remain in Switzerland for an exhibition until June 7. It’s a significant step in preserving Mesopotamian heritage and promoting cultural cooperation between the two nations.
