The World Bank’s recent blog highlighted the urban dynamics and challenges in Greater Casablanca, emphasizing severe traffic congestion due to underinvestment in urban mobility. With over 13% of Morocco’s population living on less than 1% of the national territory, the region is vital for the country’s economic growth, contributing significantly to the national GDP.
The report pointed out the social inequalities and poverty pockets in the area, emphasizing the impact of deteriorating urban transport conditions on vulnerable groups and the environment. Despite these challenges, the Moroccan government and local municipalities have made substantial efforts to improve urban mobility, investing over US$2 billion in the past 15 years.
The recent launch of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system promises significant improvements in daily commutes, reducing journey times by at least 30 minutes for residents in densely populated areas. Additionally, the National Railways Agency is working on expanding high-quality transport services with a 60-kilometer railway line to connect suburbs and neighboring towns.
This comprehensive approach to urban mobility projects, supported by the World Bank, is not only improving lives but also enhancing the potential of Greater Casablanca for modern urban development. With continued collaboration and innovation, the region is paving the way for integrated, accessible, and sustainable urban mobility in the MENA region.
