Rise of heat and hateful rhetoric as India votes in penultimate phase of massive national election

India Conducts Sixth Phase of Massive National Election

Millions of voters braved the scorching sun to participate in India’s sixth phase of the national election, with over 111 million voters across eight states and federal territories casting their votes. This phase will decide the fate of 889 candidates vying for 58 seats, including all seven seats in the capital city of Delhi. The final phase of voting will take place on June 1, with results set to be announced on June 4.

The ongoing election, with nearly 969 million eligible voters, will determine if Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party will secure a third consecutive term in power. Amidst the extreme heat, voters stood in long queues to cast their ballots, prompting appeals from officials to encourage voter turnout.

Despite the challenges, as of 3pm local time, 49.20% of registered voters had already voted. The election has been marked by divisive rhetoric, with Mr. Modi facing criticism for targeting the country’s Muslim minority in his speeches.

While the election is ongoing, efforts to maintain communal harmony are crucial as the nation waits for the final outcome.
