LIMA, Peru (AP) — Over the weekend, hundreds of clowns gathered in the streets of Peru’s capital to celebrate Clown Day with a colorful parade. The event, which takes place annually on May 25, includes awards for the best costumes, makeup, routine, and improvisation.

Clown “Chalupa” expressed the desire for an official Clown Day in Peru to receive support from the government and municipalities, providing access to government funds and performance spaces. This recognition could also lead to the establishment of schools to teach the art of clowning.

While a proposed bill for the holiday has not been discussed in Parliament, there are an estimated 200,000 clowns in Peru, including those who work at children’s events and circuses. Participant Miguel Ara Stein emphasized the talents required to be a clown, such as acting, character portrayal, and improvisation.

Join us in celebrating the art of clowning and the joy they bring to people’s lives!
