Over 10K people arrive in UK via small-boats in 2021 | Immigration & asylum

A staggering 10,170 individuals have arrived in the UK this year by crossing the English Channel in small boats, breaking the previous record set in 2017. This influx of migrants poses a challenge to the government’s promise to “stop the boats” ahead of the upcoming general election on 4th July.

Despite plans to deport migrants to Rwanda, no flights have taken off yet, casting doubt on the effectiveness of the scheme which would cost £1.8m per person sent. The Conservatives have made immigration a focal point of their campaign, criticizing Labour for proposing an “amnesty” for migrants.

Migration is a prominent issue in the election, especially in areas where the Tories are facing competition from other parties. The government claims to have dismantled 82 criminal groups involved in organized crossings and is collaborating with the French to prevent further incidents.

The Home Office states: “We continue to work closely with our French partners to prevent crossings and save lives.”
