Ontario settles land claim with Matachewan FN

The Ontario government announced a settlement in a treaty land entitlement claim with the Matachewan First Nation, providing $590,000 and over 2,000 hectares of Crown land to be added to their reserve.

Treaty land entitlement claims address historical injustices where First Nations did not receive the full land promised under treaties, such as Treaty 9 or the James Bay Treaty.

Despite having rights to a certain amount of land per family, Matachewan First Nation did not receive its entitled share. Ontario has settled 65 claims with Indigenous communities since 1983.
