Man convicted of murder in killing of WA officer by deputy

Murder Conviction in 2022 Death of Police Officer

A Washington state man, Julio Segura, was found guilty of murder for his role in the 2022 death of Vancouver police officer Donald Sahota. Segura was convicted on counts of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and eluding police, but acquitted of attempted murder.

The incident occurred when Segura, after robbing a gas station, led deputies on a chase that ended at Sahota’s home. Segura fatally stabbed Sahota during a struggle, after which a deputy mistakenly shot and killed Sahota.

Prosecutors argued that Segura’s actions caused Sahota’s death by engaging in criminal conduct that posed a grave risk to others. Segura claimed self-defense, while his defense attorneys criticized law enforcement’s handling of the situation.

The sentencing is set for June 27, as Sahota’s family and friends continue to mourn his loss amidst the resolution of the case.
