The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to immediately end its military offensive in Rafah, Gaza, and to open the Rafah crossing for humanitarian aid. The court emphasized that Israel’s efforts to protect civilians from harm were insufficient, resulting in a disastrous humanitarian situation in Rafah.

Following the displacement of over a million people in the city, the court demanded that Israel allow urgent humanitarian assistance into Gaza to prevent starvation deaths. Despite the ruling, Israel seized control of the Rafah crossing, exacerbating the crisis.

The ICJ mandated Israel to keep the crossing open for essential services and aid, as well as facilitate the access of investigative bodies to examine allegations of genocide. However, Israeli officials expressed defiance and reluctance to comply with the court’s orders.

The ruling prompted calls for an arms embargo on Israel and increased pressure on countries funding the Israeli military. The court’s decision underscored the need for international action to end the atrocities in Gaza and hold Israel accountable for its actions.
