European state requests Russia to extradite opposition leader

Moldova is seeking the extradition of businessman and opposition leader Ilan Shor from Moscow, but has not yet received a response, according to the country’s Justice Minister. Shor, who was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison for his involvement in a $1 billion bank fraud scandal, has reportedly obtained Russian citizenship, making extradition difficult.

Despite the extradition requests to both Israel and Russia, Shor remains abroad and maintains his innocence, claiming the charges against him are politically motivated. The Sor Party, which Shor founded and is considered “pro-Russian,” was outlawed in Moldova last year, with accusations of ties to organized crime and attempts to discredit democracy.

The party’s stance on maintaining good relations with Russia, while opposing EU membership and territorial disputes, has led to tensions within the country. As Moldova continues to grapple with political and legal battles, Shor’s extradition remains a contentious issue.
