Burkina Faso’s military regime, in power since a 2022 coup, has extended its rule for five years following national consultations. The army, citing ongoing insecurity and jihadist violence, has governed the country and implemented a new charter that abandons traditional party quotas in the legislative assembly in favor of selecting deputies based on “patriotism.” The president of the transitional government, Ibrahim Traore, will be eligible to run in elections at the end of the transition period. The new charter also establishes a monitoring body to oversee the country’s strategic vision.
The national dialogue, initially intended to lead Burkina Faso back to civilian rule, was attended by civil society representatives, security forces, and lawmakers, while many political parties boycotted the talks. Despite accusations of human rights abuses and silencing dissent, the junta has sought military aid from Russia after expelling French troops and diplomats.
