British Parliamentarians Advocate for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan in Western Sahara

A group of British parliamentarians, mainly from the Conservative Party, are urging the UK government to support Morocco’s proposal for governing the disputed Western Sahara region. The Moroccan Autonomy Plan grants Rabat control over national security and foreign relations in the area while allowing the Sahrawi people limited autonomy, aiming to bring lasting peace and stability.

Signed by prominent figures like former defence secretary Liam Fox and MP Rehman Chishti, the letter to Foreign Secretary David Cameron highlights the international support for Morocco’s initiative, seen as a practical approach to resolving the conflict. Despite criticism from the Polisario Front and Sahrawis, countries like the US and France back the autonomy plan as a basis for negotiations.

While the Polisario Front pushes for a UN referendum on self-determination, Morocco emphasizes the autonomy plan as a realistic solution for regional development and stability. As the UK heads towards a general election, the call for supporting Morocco’s proposal adds to the ongoing debate surrounding Western Sahara’s future.
