TikTok, the popular video-sharing app, has implemented new restrictions on state-affiliated media accounts to prevent foreign interference in major election events.
In an effort to promote authenticity on its platform, TikTok announced that state-backed accounts will no longer be recommended in users’ feeds or permitted to advertise outside their respective countries.
The platform also revealed plans to introduce a Transparency Report on covert influence operations and disclose details of previously removed operations.
Amid growing concerns, TikTok identified and disrupted numerous influence operations, including those related to political events in Indonesia and the UK.
Despite facing pressure in the US to separate from its Chinese ownership, TikTok has consistently refuted claims of sharing user data with the Chinese government.
As numerous countries gear up for elections in 2024, TikTok’s actions aim to safeguard the integrity of its platform during a critical year for democracy worldwide.
