Northern elders blame lawmakers for abolishing five emirates

The recent events in Kano, including the multiplication of emirates and the dethronement of traditional rulers, have sparked concern and agitation among the Northern Elders Forum (NEF). Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the Director of Publicity and Advocacy of the forum, emphasized the need for caution and professionalism in handling the sensitive issue to prevent further escalation of tensions.

NEF called for calm from both the Kano state government and the public, stressing the importance of prioritizing peace and harmony. They highlighted the challenges faced by the traditional institution in Nigeria, particularly in Kano, where the multiplication of emirates weakens traditional rulers’ authority and allows for political manipulation.

The arbitrary dethronement of high-ranking traditional rulers not only undermines their legitimacy but also threatens the centuries-old customs and traditions that form the foundation of Nigerian society. NEF advocated for the restoration of statutory recognition and empowerment of traditional rulers to effectively carry out their duties.
