Lizeka Tonjeni, a former Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) employee, has been found guilty of accepting a R160 000 bribe from Digital Vibes, a communications company. The bribe was received while Tonjeni was a project manager for a R3.9-million contract awarded to Digital Vibes. Despite claiming innocence and stating that the money received was a loan and payment for healthcare products, the court ruled in favor of the State’s evidence.
The court also revealed that the actual owner of Digital Vibes was Tahera Mather, who made multiple payments to Tonjeni over two years. These transactions were linked to Mather’s company, Composite Trade and Investments. Despite Tonjeni’s defense about running a side business, the court found her guilty of corruption.
This case sheds light on the corruption involved in government contracts and emphasizes the consequences of accepting bribes. The investigation also uncovered irregularities in a R150-million health department tender awarded to Digital Vibes, involving prominent figures like former Minister Zweli Mkhize.
