In February and March 2024, B’Tselem documented some 20 incidents in which illegal Jewish settlers and soldiers drove Palestinian shepherds out of pastureland in the South Hebron (Al Khalil) Hills.
The Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem has reported that Israel is forcefully displacing Palestinian pastoral communities from their homes in the West Bank through a combination of official practices and organized settler violence. In a recent statement, B’Tselem detailed around 20 incidents in February and March 2024, where illegal Jewish settlers and soldiers used various means to expel Palestinian shepherds from their grazing lands in the South Hebron Hills. This systematic pattern of settler actions is aimed at advancing Israel’s policy of expulsion, severely impacting the survival of these communities.
Video Footage
B’Tselem supported their statement with video footage documenting the expulsions, revealing the aggressive tactics employed by settlers and soldiers. The organization emphasized the increasing establishment of illegal settlements by settlers with state support, leading to further encroachment on Palestinian land and resources.
Forced to Scale Back
Under the threat of violence and intimidation, Palestinian communities are being forced to abandon traditional economic activities like shepherding and farming, disrupting their livelihoods. Meanwhile, settlers continue to freely exploit Palestinian lands, harassing residents and causing damage. B’Tselem condemns these actions as part of the Israeli apartheid regime’s agenda to Judaize the area and dispossess Palestinians of their land.
