Indian Spice Exporters Under Investigation for Cancer-Causing Pesticides

Indian spice exporters are under scrutiny after tests revealed high levels of cancer-causing pesticides in their products, prompting global food regulators to take action.

The Spice Board of India is investigating MDH and Everest, two top spice brands, for elevated levels of a carcinogenic pesticide called ethylene oxide. Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, the US, and the UK are all looking into complaints regarding these brands.

While MDH denies the use of ethylene oxide, Everest is working to ensure compliance. The impact on India’s $4bn spice export industry is significant, with cancellations of overseas orders due to contamination concerns.

Global Trade Research Initiative estimates that over half of all orders may be affected. This issue highlights the need for strict regulations and quality control in the spice industry to protect consumers worldwide.
