The International Court of Justice (ICJ) recently ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in Rafah, Gaza, to prevent worsening conditions of life for Palestinians. This order came in response to an application brought by South Africa, seeking to address alleged violations by Israel under the Genocide Convention.
The ICJ emphasized the need for Israel to conform to its obligations and ensure the provision of humanitarian aid and access for investigative bodies into Gaza. The court reaffirmed previous provisional measures and required Israel to submit a report on its compliance.
Court president judge Nawaf Salam expressed concern over the captive individuals from the attack on Israel and called for their immediate release. The ICJ’s decision aims to protect the rights of Palestinians and uphold international law.
