The British Columbia government is embarking on a $900 million project to build hydrogen production plants and refuelling stations, creating 300 jobs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the province.
The Canada Infrastructure Bank is providing a $337 million loan to support the project by hydrogen company HTEC, aiming to construct 20 hydrogen refuelling stations, with 18 in B.C. and the remaining in Alberta.
The new refuelling stations will be supplied by three hydrogen production plants in Burnaby, Nanaimo, and Prince George. Additionally, a facility to liquefy 15 tonnes of hydrogen byproduct will be built in North Vancouver, generating over 280 jobs under the project named H2 Gateway.
The initiative is geared towards hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, capable of long-distance travel with short refuelling times, with 14 stations able to refuel up to 300 heavy vehicles daily.
Premier David Eby believes H2 Gateway provides economic benefits, job opportunities, and pollution reduction, with the potential to cut emissions by about 133,000 tonnes annually.
