Rwanda opposition candidate seeks regional court help to protect civic rights

By LUKE ANAMI

A prominent Rwandan opposition leader, Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, is taking her battle for political rights to the East African Court of Justice. She is seeking the opportunity to register a political party and participate in the upcoming presidential elections in July. Ingabire, a vocal critic of President Paul Kagame, has faced challenges in exercising her civic rights in Rwanda.

Her application to the EACJ, filed through Lumumba & Ayieko Advocates, also includes a plea for permission to travel to the Netherlands to see her family. After years of exile and imprisonment, Ingabire is fighting for her right to political participation and personal freedom.

With the May 30 deadline approaching for presidential candidates’ applications, Ingabire is racing against time to secure her place in the election. Her legal battle showcases the ongoing struggle for democracy and human rights in Rwanda.
