Russia announced on Wednesday that its forces had recaptured the village of Klishchiivka in Ukraine, marking one of their biggest territorial gains in the war-torn eastern region. This victory comes as Ukraine struggles to obtain much-needed weapon supplies from the US and Europe.
Klishchiivka is located in the Donetsk territory, a key industrial area in the east that Russia claimed to have annexed in late 2022. The Ukrainian army, facing intense pressure, recently fought off a ground offensive in the Kharkiv region, further depleting their already limited resources.
Russian troops initially captured Klishchiivka in January 2023, only for Ukraine to temporarily reclaim it in September. The ongoing conflict has led to casualties on both sides, with reports of a Russian drone attack killing a Ukrainian police officer.
The situation remains tense, with Russia claiming control of key strongholds like Bilogorivka and launching attacks on Ukrainian cities, while Ukraine retaliates in border regions. The conflict has also extended to infrastructure targets, with reports of drone attacks on a nuclear power plant.
As the conflict escalates, both sides are preparing for more intense battles as the region remains volatile and uncertain.
