Norway Closes Border to Russian Tourists in Response to Ukraine Conflict
Norway has announced that it will be closing its border to Russian tourists, effectively shutting off their last direct access to the Schengen area in Europe. This decision comes as part of Norway’s efforts to stand by its allies and partners in response to Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.
As of 29 May, most Russian tourists will no longer be able to enter Norway, with exceptions only being made for work, study, and visits to close family residing in the country. This move follows Norway’s decision to stop issuing most tourist visas to Russians back in spring 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine.
Previously, holders of long-term visas or visas from other Schengen member countries could still enter Norway via the Storskog-Boris Gleb border crossing. However, this will no longer be allowed starting on 29 May.
While Norway is not a member of the EU, it works closely with the bloc, which had already implemented similar measures towards Russians following the Ukraine conflict. The Schengen area allows for border-free travel within most European countries.
With this border closure, Norway is taking a firm stance in solidarity with Ukraine and standing up against Russian aggression.\
