Meta recently suspended the Facebook and Instagram accounts of a right-wing Israeli group, Tzav 9, which has been organizing attacks on aid convoys headed to Gaza. The group has been blocking aid shipments since January, demanding the release of hostages taken by Hamas in October 2023.
Tzav 9 claimed responsibility for blocking a shipment from Jordan at the Tarqumiya checkpoint and setting two trucks on fire, leading to the suspension of their social media accounts by Meta for violating their Coordinating Harm policy.
Amidst growing pressure to crack down on accounts inciting violence or spreading misinformation, Meta has been accused of systemic censorship, especially during Israel’s war on Gaza. Palestinians have turned to social media as a key source of information due to media bans, telecommunications blackouts, and Israeli aggression.
Jalal Abukhater from 7amleh emphasized the urgency for Meta to effectively moderate violent content and prevent incitement against Palestinians by Israeli groups. Balanced moderation is essential to curb online violence and hate speech.
